Introduction to Data Warehousing and OLAP
Data warehousing and OLAP concepts are introduced in this hour long college-level lecture from the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras.
The video starts off making the point that end users of data warehousing are very different from those involved in DBMS management tasks. Whereas “database” users are typically involved with the reading and writing of data to the database, “data warehouse” users are looking for the business knowledge that can be extracted from the data. They are looking for data warehousing and OLAP (Online Analytical Processing) to turn the data into knowledge.
The instructor points out that the data warehouse is used for strategic purposes while the regular dbms usage is geared towards tactical or operational use.
Outline:
- Introduction
- OLAP versus OLTP
- Data Cleaning and Integration
- Data Models and Warehouse Design
- Index Structures for Data Warehouses
