Successful information design allows seemingly hard-to-explain complexites to be illustrated in a simple straight-forward manner. Solid information visualization applied to business intelligence makes for intuitive dashboards and scorecards.

For inspiration, take a look at this “Xplanation” of the credit crisis. Of course this is of interest because it’s topical, but also note the style of information design.

Wait a minute, you may say after watching this video. “It’s just a simple cartoon! How did it take a team of information designers to come up with that?”

The simplicity of the presentation is a hard-won thing. Information designers pare down the details of the presentation until complexity becomes clarity. These designers used universally understood icons and graphics to get the message across in an efficient manner. Just like a haiku, the essense of the message is transmitted in a seemingly simple fashion.

We must take that lesson to heart when designing our business intelligence dashboards and enterprise reports. Think about what information the end users really need and the most straight-forward way to present it.
